What a Construction PE Does Daily

The Project Engineer is the operational support layer of a construction project. A PE's daily work includes managing the submittal log — tracking which items have been sent to design, returned with comments, and resubmitted. They draft and log RFIs, coordinate procurement schedules with the PM, and maintain the project's document control system.

On the field side, PEs attend subcontractor coordination meetings, assist the superintendent with scheduling documentation, and manage punch list tracking during closeout. On tech-forward projects, they may run the BIM coordination process or manage the project's digital job site tools.

The best PEs are fast learners with strong organizational instincts. The role is intentionally broad — designed to build the foundational knowledge needed to grow into an APM or PM role within 3–5 years. GCs that invest in PE development build the strongest long-term leadership pipelines.

Required Qualifications & Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or Architectural Engineering (required)
  • 0–3 years of construction experience; internship experience a strong differentiator
  • Familiarity with Procore, Bluebeam, or similar document management tools
  • Basic understanding of construction drawings, specifications, and RFI/submittal processes
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred for engineering-degree candidates
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Willingness to spend time in the field alongside office work
  • Valid driver's license
